Wood Staining and Coating
One of the biggest tasks in facility maintenance is wood staining. Staining is a delicate process with precise steps necessary to yield a beautiful finish result. The process can be tricky and when done without expert knowledge and skill it can end up streaky and inconsistent. Roe Paint offers a variety of different wood staining services that cover a wide range of materials and products. Our staining process has been perfected over the years and our expert staff have to know how and tools to create a beautiful cohesive stain.
The Basics of Staining
Staining is the process of adding color to the wood that creates a seal coat. This seal coat acts as a protective finish on the wood helping to protect it from solar damage, water penetration and other contaminants. Staining can be used on both interior and exterior wood projects and it is commonly used for decks, fences, stair rails and doors. Roe Paint has worked in the industry a long time and has found that 3-5 years is the best interval between stains but this range can vary based on the type of material, use and exposure. Decks and fences can be stained with a variety of different materials but solid body or semi-solid stains are ideal for this application. The stain types can help with protection for the elements and Roe Paint is happy to help choose the right stain for your project.
Railings
Handrails, wooden railings and decks are common areas that Roe Paint services and need to be cared for properly to ensure safety. Facility Maintenance has a huge safety component and stair railing are a big concern. Stain helps protect the wood from damage that can be caused by moisture and sun exposure, this damage can lead to rot, splintering and weak spots. Staining also adds color to the wood which can be aesthetically pleasing. Stain color choices are extensive and can make your fence or deck match the store front, restaurant or color scheme of the office building you are maintaining.
Interior Staining
Interior wood surfaces also need to be stained and properly maintained. The color choices for interior stain are often more design focused and can make the wood elements of your space feel cohesive. Beams can be stained to add depth and dimension to your ceiling, baseboards are often stained and dark stains help camouflage scuffs from shoes, and solid wood doors may be stained as well. Interior staining is a great way to add color to trim and protect wood from moisture and sunlight. Facility maintenance teams focus on the safety and functionality of a space and may find handrails and doors to be a bigger focus than the aesthetics of interior wood.
Staining Previously Painted Wood
Previously painted wood can be a challenging material to stain. In both the interior and exterior staining fields depending on the type of paint that was used it may be possible to stain the wood while some paints make staining impossible. Acrylic paints are easy to remove and can be removed with a chemical remover. This type of paint can be removed and then the wood can be stained. Oil based paints cannot be removed entirely making staining over them a poor choice. Oil based products seep into the pores of the wood and make it challenging to get the new stain to take.
